The way you overcame some of the build difficulties is way beyond my abilities. I can sure appreciate the amount of sweat and work that goes into these kinds of builds. It looks great. Thank you. Thanks everybody!
I've decided to concentrate my efforts on something more appropriate, a nice little Monogram kit - skill level 2.
(I really need a break, lol)

Lol. But is a skill level 2 Monogram a break?

Some -very little - progress.
I cannibalized a kit tire, of which I have many, and a tire from I know not what but it's the right diameter, just 15" unfortunately. But by gluing the sidewall of the kit tire to the other one, after carefully cutting it in half, I have this
I have zero success making 2 piece molds, so half a tire at a time. After making a silicone mold, I tried what should have been a simple pour. These are two failed results:
Plus I had 2 that simply would not set properly, one that bubbled like a volcano and one that gave off so much fumes we had to evacuate the house. That's with 3 different resins. I've never had problems like this before! A fourth resin, acquired from Michaels craft store of all places, worked perfectly fine. So I ended up with:
A little work with a random orbit sander on the mating surfaces, a socket for alignment, and rotated until I got the best match:
CA'd together, some sanding and a coat of Motomaster black primer, test fit of rim: (kit tire for comparison)
Some success, to a degree. I like to scuff up my tires, the 2 or 3 laps look, this one looks like it did 100 laps around Zandvoort. Maybe that's not such a bad thing, lol.
But at least I know it can be done, and I need 5 more rears, so maybe they'll improve.
No idea how to do the fronts yet.

Keep plugging away, Paul, you'll figure it out! That looks SO much better than the kit tires! I think you're on the right track.

Looking good Paul! Looks like you’ve got a solution there. Even if the tires are well used. Lol!

You did good Paul. When I started molding, I had the same problem with the resin bubbling up in the mold. It was really wearied. I didn't know what the heck was going on. I thought it was bad Resin. But...it turned out that I was mixing the resin with a pop cycle stick. Not good...it's porous and will pick up moister. I started mixing the resin with a handle of a plastic spoon and haven't had a problem since. I also use Smooth-on TASK 14, which is a two part black urethane resin. Works GREAT and don't smell at all....Plus you don't have to paint it because it's black right out of the Gate. Here are a few pics of the tires and wheels that mastered and poured. Asphalt Masters...The white Tires haven't been poured yet. 16th Scale dirt tire masters... This is the 16th scale dirt modified that I did a few yrs back with the dirt tires and wide 5's that was scratch built.... Not trying to steel your thread...just trying to show that it's a cool thing learning to make your own parts when you find the right material. Hope this helps you more than henders you.

Thanks for that Gary. Want to make some tires for me?
I've made latex molds, silicone molds, play doh molds, I've made resin parts, even complete resin engines, and never had any real problems. Some didn't work, but the next one did. Not with this.
Some of the problems, OK one resin I used is resin plus a few drops of hardener, it's tricky because it varies too much with temp, humidity, how thick is the part, etc but I've given up with it (plus the fumes really get to me, even outdoors). But I have 2 other resins I've used before, idiot proof. Mix 2 equal parts by volume. Always worked fine until now. Does anyone know, does this stuff have a shelf life? It just doesn't work properly. So the craft store stuff works great, no fumes, just takes about 3 days to fully cure. That's alright, as long as I know it will work I'm not in a hurry.
I shall plod along, sooner or later I might end up with something worth having.
cheers

Me again. After another month of trial and total error, I have 4 tires I can put on the car. They are dimensionally accurate, and look horrible. But, they press on the rims (success!) and the rims can be removed from the car (the rears just slide in and out, the fronts have - gasp - screws holding them on). So they'll do until I can cobble up something better, at least the car can sit on the shelf. They look like slicks but they actually have a shadow of tread on them. I should have just made slicks, that would have been easy, lol. So here she is, finished, sort of.

There are no 1/12th decals for this car, so I used Indycals Lotus 49 decals and modified them to suit. Not quite right but close.

Body off shots. The rear wheel camber would be cured if I glued the axles together, but that will have to wait.

Wow, Paul, tires aside, that thing looks awesome! I'm sure you'll solve the tire dilemma soon enough. You did a way better job than I would ever have had the patience for.

Turned out nice! Good to be able to get it up on the shelf. I’m sure you’ll find some tires you like better at some point but those are a pretty good fill in.

A nicely done rescue of a kit. I do love a bit of scratch building to renovate an otherwise poor kit. Great work especially on the engine.

I really liked the tires that you made, Paul. Did you receive the tires off of EBAY yet? If so...how are they and did you use them...empty minds want to know. LOL
