I layed down some white lettering decals on some tires. Even though they got very wrinkled while trying to place them on the tires they straightened out just fine and the lettering was unharmed. Unfortunately, when I started to put the red lettering from the very same decal sheet on, the red is cracking and lifting off the carrier film, no matter how gentle I am trying to be. I would like to know what the consensus is among you fellow modellors as to the best method of preventing this. I have tried clear coating decals that were cracking, but with little success. Is there one type of clear that works best? The decals are only about 3 years old. I still have the body of the car to put graphics on and sure don't want that splintering and cracking to happen when I do those graphics!

I've had some luck with brushing a coat of future over old decals, but your best option is probably to replace the decals.

You can brush on a few coats of liquid decal film (let it dry overnight). It might work, wouldn't bet on it.
I've got into the habit of scanning my decal sheets into my computer, that way I can maybe print a replacement if I had too. It has saved a couple of builds for me.

Gotta agree with this...

Thanks for that suggestion. I have never heard of liquid decal film. I usually cut the decals off the carrier sheet but I realized even a slight bending of the red color because of using scissors caused cracking so I am using an exacto to cut them out and then keeping them as flat as possible. That made a big difference.

my experience, 1 in 5 that it will work - but worth a try

Many modellers have used Johnson's Klear, Future, Revive It, whatever it is named now to put a flexible coat on old decals (I'm sure they used to be called waterslide transfers).
The product is basically a clear acrylic floor sealing liquid to go into vinyl tiles. It is thin and tough. After all it is designed to be walked on. Brush application levels off beautifully and the product does not yellow like clear enamel, lacquer or varnish after a time.
