Slightly off kilter but valid none the less I suppose.
Spark have produced a run of 1/5 scaled helmets both Car and bike racing subjects.
Mainly sold as a newsagents outlet collection series in Italy, Spain and oddly Argentina.
I picked up two from evilbay and went to work on one of them as a quick project
to see if I could sort out something I wanted to add to my collection.
Given my angle is driver subject driven rather than make or category focused
the idea of a model helmet appealed.
The Andretti on the left is as manufactured.
On the right is a standard mid seventies Bell Lid which I repainted and decaled into the 1977 Gunnar Nilsson Crash hat.
And like the current car models they do come with prohibited sponsor decals to add yourself.
They come out easy. Can unscrew the visor and take off the airline and go for it.
Masking on curves can be tricky but came out OK.
I may get two more to do another couple of driver's lids not included in the collection.
The nice thing about the collection is that they do cover so many of the Helmet types
used from the early 1970's up to the present day.
Seen the GPA and Simpson Star Wars types available as well as the lid Ickx used in 1979 with the two cut outs for the eyes
with the central bar rather than the full letterbox type opening.
This does give many the scope to get on and do virtually any lid used by your favourite driver.
You may even find your favourite 'jockey's' dome already available.
Just wondering if those of you in North America might find it cheaper to get them from Argentina
rather than Europe if you fancied having a go at one.
