Hi all - I am new to the forum and am looking forward to 'meeting' you all. My first post is about the various Lola T-90s that raced at the 1990 Indy 500. I am helping a friend build a batch of 1/43 scale models of these beautiful cars. The body and details are all looking amazing and I am just finalising the decal design for him, where I've got a-little-bit-stuck. The cars I am working on right now (but will take requests ...) are Pancho Carter (Hardee's), Bobby Rahal (Kraco), AJ Foyt (Copenhagen), Dominic Dobson (Havoline), Al Unser Jr (Valvoline) and of course Arie Luyendijk's Domino's car. My main challenges right now are;
- I have presentation shots of most of these cars but less so of them in race livery; I could do with help re the latter, assuming most people prefer them 'as raced'? - Pancho Carter had a few decals just in front of the rear wheel, one of them being, I believe, something with a flag and IDEAL, but can't recognise what they were?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll be sure to let you know once my friend has finished the cars!
Matt

Welcome to the Forum Matt! Glad to have you here.
Ah, the never ending search for that elusive decal that you can't quite make out or decal that was there on race day but not on the qualifying photo. It's something we all go through and you've come to the right place.
Tricks I have learned are: #1 - Internet search typing in key words you are looking for. #2 - Indycals web site. Michael does excellent research capturing every contingent on a car. Even if Michael doesn't make the particular decal set you are looking for, a lot of the cars shared the same contingency decals for that year. #3 - Go to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway photo shop. (If you can) It is in the museum on the second floor. I have literally gone there with a big list and sat there for hours taking notes and making drawings of missing decals. The photos are of high quality and you can zoom in on them. I have even called and requested they search and do an ID for me. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't but it's worth a try. #4 - Watch the race on You Tube. Many times I have found things I would never have known. Drivers wearing a different drivers suit or wearing a special race day helmet. Glove, shoe colors etc. The best is to watch at the beginning when the cars on on the grid or sometimes the camera zooms in on their pit stop or sadly, their crash.
Wish I could help you with this particular decal but unless someone else knows, you will have to research.

Ha, indeed! It's not my first and will certainly not be my last. So close and yet, so far away! Thanks for the tips. I've resolved those decals now but have yet more to figure out, atop the car!

Thanks guys - and thanks Hot Shoe! I managed to grab the Ideal and chequered logo next to it from another shot of this model so that's now sorted. I also found the "Stoops RACING TEAM" from that model; I noticed the actual car had two other decals between that and the "Phillips Industries" I still need to resolve as well!

The T-90 being a new car for me, I've noticed a few differences which some of you may be able to elaborate on or confirm? I think the Cossie cars had fillers further down the spine of the engine deck? (Pancho, Dobson) I noticed on some cars the sidepods ran further along on top (ending in a longer scoop) than others? (Rahal, Dobson?) Some cars ran small NACA ducts on the side pods sides? (Unser, Rahal, Foyt) Rear wings, too. varied in the size and shape of their end plates?
