It's a no brainer that Indy is my favorite race, always has been, always will be. But I've got to say it, I miss the traditional qualifying format. I don't care for the current cheesy NASCARish Fast Nine Shootout nonsense (or whatever the heck they call it). Indy is about tradition and history. They say they're honoring that as they keep changing things. And not for the better.

well due to the debacle of the new chevy speedway aerokit and its penchant for getting airborne, the fast 9 has been canned for today.

It's hard to believe just how badly Indycar has screwed this up.

Agreed, seems like Chevy is getting preferential treatment. Honda is saying, let us race what we brought, and Chevy has a problem, and now a knee jerk reaction, Sarah Fisher say's they've lost a million dollars in damaged race cars over the last few days. I don't understand why they dont run what we've run the last few years, use the same DW12 aero kit, pump up the boost, and let em qualify.

There's more missing than just tradition! Now I remember why I stopped going to this race.

I love the fast 9... when it works. But there have always been 'wrenches' thrown into qualifying from time to time. The biggest mistake would have been pretending that 4 days of qualifying (three of which were basically just practice days with nothing significant happening until the last hour) - was still a viable model. The biggest tradition of Indy is that things change.

The main problem nowadays is people's attention span is not like us model builders were we can be entertained by one car at a time going around the track for 4 laps for all day long. Society is faster than ever before and what used to happen back in the day just doesn't work anymore.
I would love to see a tradition month of May were it drags out all month long but with how costly everything is anymore, its just not feasible.

What bothers me is that the driver isn't so much the main factor in qualifying that much. It's who got the least amount of sun or whether the wind sock kicked up during your run. Seems everyone was at 100% throttle all the way around. Has it really come down to who can turn the steering wheel the slightest?
Also something else that puzzles me. Is it "Indycar" or is it "IRL"? Twice when they interviewed Penske after "the meeting", Penske referred to the series not once but twice as the IRL. Foyt also referred to it as the IRL.
This is NOT a split thing. I am so over that and especially as an ADMIN the last thing I want to do is start a split thread. Just curious!!!

After the last few days, today went better than I expected. I have always been a Buddy Lazier fan, but the last few years have been pathetic (sorry Eric). IMO with all this aero junk, they have been taking the driver out of the car more, and more for several years, Stu. I just google Indycar, and the site comes up, so I assume that's the correct name, but I don't really know.

I find it ironic that they've gone to the public for their 30 million dollar facelift when the product has been so diluted that fewer and fewer people seem to care. I love the race and the facility but please stop the madness.

The sisters that now run the show care nothing about racing, John. They are only interested in money. Many have learned, much too late, that when you take the first nickel from any Government, you now have a partner for life.

I love the race and the facility but please stop the madness. John Oh, don't get me started with their "facelift" crap. The people who live on the westside of Indy (myself included) were ready to burn the place down when they closed off Georgetown Rd. and built that stupid roundabout. Just another example of the greed and under the table dealings between IMS and the politicians in Speedway, who don't give a crap about the people who live here. They disrupted the traffic flow, closed a major through street (that will go unused 8 months out of the year), disrupted the lives of countless Speedway citizens and built that roundabout that no one living here wanted. All they had to do was give access to Georgetown from the roundabout and just close it when they needed to (as they have done every year) and everyone would have been happy. BUT... that's not what IMS wanted. On another note, I watched my first Indycar race in a long time when they were at Barber. I love that course and have to say, it was enjoyable to watch. However... where do they get these drivers? Carlos Huertas? Sage Karam? Stefano Coletti? And my personal favorite... Gabby Chaves? Who are these guys?

Carlos Huertas? Sage Karam? Stefano Coletti? And my personal favorite... Gabby Chaves? Who are these guys? I haven't heard of most of them until they got/bought their way to Indy Cars, except for Karam. I've known of the kid since he was a very junior karter, and he was kick (expletive deleted) kart racer. Being a karter myself, I have a lot of respect for anyone that reaches success at the top-level of karting and then advances to the professional ranks. A lot of good kart racers never mnade it. There have been some pretty solid drivers come through the same path since my days racing, including Newgarden, Scott Pruett, Richie Hearn, Bryan Herta, PJ Jones, Buddy Rice, Alex Barron, Phil Geibler, AJ Allmendinger, just to name the ones I saw rise. Karam is young, and I'm pretty sure he's not bringing money, or he wouldn't be ride-sharing with Saavedra this season. I'd love to see him get some experience and have a successful career...

The speedway has plans in place to expand the Main grandstands over what was Georgetown Rd. and add more Suites, which well bring inn more dollars for the speedway, The speedway has been buying most of the property along Georgetown Rd. for years, with this plan in mind. I do understand your frustration over this issue, I'm not a great fan of the roundabouts be this is happening all over, They have installed quite a few here in St.Louis and they are not well liked by most of the people. Just like the days of the Cloverleaf's as exits on the Interstates are disappearing. I just waiting to see what Race Day is like with the roundabout. They had it closed off after the Indy Road Race.

I can take or leave roundabouts, but at least it's flat. Here in the metro Detroit area, they like to put them in, but "beautify" them by putting 8 ft. high flower mounds in the center, destroying visibility and making the whole thing pointless.

I wonder if the realize if they close Georgetown to the party people for the days leading up to the race that no one will show up until race day?

Closing off Georgetown is understandably frustrating, but the roundabout is FAR better than that intersection that used to be there. My only comments on the roundabout are that they need pedestrian tunnels or bridges. That's gonna get ugly on race weekends.
and yeah, flower mounds in roundabouts are stupid.
