I have this kit as well and I'll enjoy watching your build. I love the ships of the "New Steel Navy" and this will be a treat.

One of the first thins is to replace the barrels for the 10 sponson mounted 5" guns with some of the turned brass barrels.

As someone that has been on the Olympia this is very cool. She is a grand old ship and deserves a full restoration.

I've thought for years of doing the Titanic, but doing a proper job would be very daunting. Like the guys have said, this should be fun to watch.

Sponson guns installed. Rear life boat racks removed. These will be replaced with photo-etched. Bow emblem removed, to be replaced with a photo-etched one, and forward torpedo tube removed, this will be replaced with a resin one from the upgrade. All stanchions have also been removed, the handrails will be replaced with a much more scale friendly photo-etch.

I'm impressed with all the Photo-Etched, but I'm blown away by the deck veneer! You do know that all those decks need to be swabbed--ten times a day! Hand two guys a mop, and you'll be able to tell in a second which is the Military Veteran... --Frank

She deserves it...we deserve it. Patrick

The basic hull structure is complete and ready to prime and paint. The PE sponson doors and the resin bow torpedo tube are on, as is the PE bilge keels. At the stern we have the resin rear torpedo tube, modified rudder and as you can see, the base with the included brass pedestals. As advised, I have gone out of order and installed some of the decking early. I see how this can make painting easier down the road.

Great job!
Glad to see my build is proving helpful. I had a hell of a time getting those PE sponson doors to fit properly.

The Maim Deck superstructure is complete. A lot of work went into this. The sponsons for the 5" guns where hollowed out on the back side. All the doors were replaced with PE. Many sink holes where filled and a bunch of fit problems were resolved. I addition all the raised deck details where removed as we will be installing the deck veneers.

This is a very cool project, thanks for posting. It looks so neat with all the rivets and guns sticking out down the sides.

Some progress: The maim deck is painted, the hull has been painted white and some of the detail painting is done, and a overview. More to come!!!

I am loving this WIP. What paints did you use for the superstructure and the deck?

Thanks, Kip!
The superstructure is Model Master Wood airbrushed. The decks are a wood veneer. I really like them. Well made and look great!

Looks great. I agree with you--the wood deck is top notch. This WIP made me want to do one like it but I can'r find one anywhere on the Internet.

They come up on Ebay now and then, but about $200. They went for $65-$85 a couple years ago.

I'm quite sure that I will never build a ship, but watching this one come together is very enjoyable. Your work is very impressive.
