Besides the Apache car, here's some other things not especially OWR related being worked on (but since its the weekend, what the heck!). Yep, its an airplane. This also is for Cal, its the Tamiya 1/48 P-51 being converted to Chuck Lyford's Bardahl Special racer. Fellow board member Tim W, aka pylonguy, and I have embarked on parallel builds on this one. Tim knows the pilot and has gotten some info on the details. The cockpit was modified per Mr Lyford's info. The stock Tam P-51 kit is on the sprue for comparison. The seat is an excellent resin one from Ultracast along with Eduard p/e belts. The lower wing on the right shows the plugs closing off the shell chutes as the military wings were smoothed over for racing. And project number two is this year's Homecoming Parade float for my daughter's orchestra group. Remember last's years, well I got talked into another one. This years theme is, get ready for the this, Dr Suess. Some official at my daughter's school has to be hitting the sauce pretty hard to come up with that for a theme. With a little luck, by next weekend this will be the 'How the Grinch Stole Homecoming" float complete with Whoville kids. Like last year its been fun working with the kids and watching them get involved in the project.

Couldn't you combine the two projects? Make a P-51-looking float called the Grinch who strafed Christmas. Orchestra members on the wings, a Grinch in the cockpit, a snare drummer hammering out a machine gun beat.... I bet they'd not invite you back next year!

There is two ways to get involved in volunteer projects at the school level. A) Complain about something. or B) Be really good at what you volunteered for. Which in your case is B. I remember seeing that thread last year you did a great job. Be careful they may make you the permanent Homecoming float constructor. It is fun to do if you like that type of work. I volunteer to help put the sets together for the plays at my kids High School.

INDY22IAM, thanks for the kind words. I don't know about the really good part, but like you with the sets I do enjoy volunteering and working with the kids. Its neat to see some of them paint something big for the first time. Or actually cut and nail some boards together. Here's todays update pic. Painting is nearly done so the next five days (I work two of them and won't be home) will be building some props and final decorations as Homecoming is Friday. Also there was a little progress on the P-51 racer. Mustangs had wing tanks that ran up under the cockpit floor. The fuel tank gauges came up through the floor.

Sandy you are making things difficult for me! Here I am stuck in D4 skip pit working 84 hours a week and you keep pushing ahead on the "Bardahl Special"! Chuck Lyford will really like you! All I can do is post a photo of a past completion so Calvin can see a completed model of a racer. Joe DeBona's "Magic Town". Sponsored by Jimmy Stewart. 2nd place in the 1947 Bendix Trophy. Tim

I worked at GM Design in the early 80's out of the Van Nuys plant as a Pre-production and Aerodynamics engineer, I was asked to do a bit of Aero tuning on the P51 Pylon Racer owned by a group of GM Engineers. I felt it was quite an honor as these guys dont just let anyone mess with it.. I had only a few suggestions, a sleeker canopy , some rivets changed to flush type, and a intake changed to a NACA duct.. I dont know if they used any of it but like I said as a car guy it was an honor...Chris

Homecoming is over and there's good news and bad news to report. In the face of stiff competition and a really dorky theme this year the Bruins' Orchestra "How The Grinch Stole Homecoming" float brought home a Second Place Award. Well done kids. They worked hard on it and had a lot of fun along the way. The bad news is the Bruins' football team lost in the last couple of seconds. Good try guys. Looks like the Grinch really did steal Homecoming! Here's some photos just in at the media center, Setting up at the school. Cindy Lou is wondering if anyone else notices the tow truck is on fire. Actually we'd just fired up a generator to power the sound system. The Grinch warming up, The float complete with Whovillelians ready for judging, Part of the crowd along the parade route, Entering the stadium, thats the First Place float ahead, gotta say they had some really good art work,
