Like I've shown I got this about a month ago....But here lately I've been in a Thunderboat mood! This is a 30 foot round bow conventional hydroplane with a V-12 Allison Engine. It was owned by Ole Bardahl and built by Ron Jones. The version of this boat I'm going try to depict is the first race it ever ran which was the 1958 Apple Cup on Lake Chelan, Washington. It was Christened and won all in the same weekend with Norm Evans as the driver! Nick named the GREEN Dragon it was a force to be reckoned with all season! As you can see the prep work has already begun! Good evening, François I stand, I am French and layout artist and collector. My center of interest are motorsport. I collect hydroplanes and surfing the web in search of the hydroplanes, I came across your site. In France there have been very few manufacturers to offer this kind of boats. Could you please give me contact the manufacturer "Craft Masters" so I could order some numbers kits. Thank you in advance for your help and collaboration. Best regards, François PS: will be lenient with my English.

I've come back to edit this a little....SORRY CALVIN...for not responding to your build. You've done a masterful job on this boat. If you ever get a chance to get to the Museum in Kent...you owe it to yourself to do so. It's a fairly small spot but...is it cool. They've got quite a few boats cramed in a small space...BUT...if you like the thunder boats like we do...It really don't matter. I took quite a few pics while there...I should post a few for everyone to see. They are working on rebuilding the Pay-n-Pak to get it ready for the next Seafair race next year. Right now....it's laying face down bottom side up and getting the heck sanded out of it...
Great job again on the Bardahl Calvin....
Welcome to the FORUM Francois. I have quite a few of these 1/48 scale boats that I bought from Craftmasters. Their site(like Calvin mentioned) is not in operation. They are still pouring kits for the Hydroplane Museum in Kent washington though. I went there last month for a HOTROD and BOAT show and they had at least 20 of those kits there. I'm doing a search right now to see if they sell them from their website. Well...did the search and they pulled them from the site. I called and they have 7 Kits right now. They have put an order in for more but don't know when Sean(Craftmasters) will have more poured. If you are interested in these kits....email me and maybe we can work something out. My email address is sudsantubbs@comcast.net Denise...the woman at the Museum, said she would put them aside for me(you) if you want them. Let me know Francois.... Gary

Hello,
I thank the members of the site and especially Gary, which allowed me to have two kits. I'll have a long winter with a lot of assembly. I would put pictures of my achievements. Thank you François

these boats are so big it's amazing. duane One of the biggest racing machines on earth. Here some pics that you might appreciate. Wood, sawdust, hardware, and wood glue! Which is actually one of the reasons why this boat is being redone - bad glue!

Kind of wonder how they cost out a restoration estimate on a hydroplane? By the square yard? By the cubic yard? Regardless, I'm glad to see these old girls reborn--and raced! --Frank

Measure the displacement and figure out how many dollar bills it would take to fill it. Some of those epoxy glues and varnishes cost over $100 per gallon.

Think of all the money saved on tires and wheels!
Some of these boats are known, indeed famed, simply by the sponsor's names. I sometimes wonder if companies like Bardahl have any financial involvement in the restoration? --Frank
